You don’t need to travel to Cairns to access the Great Barrier Reef, when you can skip the hordes of tourists and have a more exclusive experience, where the reef starts at Lady Elliot Island.
Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay located at the southern tip of Australia’s World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef. Approximately 80 kilometers north-east of Bundaberg and nestled in between Fraser Island and Lady Musgrave Island, Lady Elliot is the closest Great Barrier Reef island to Brisbane, Queensland’s southern capital.
What makes this spot so special is its location in the highly protected ’Green Zone’, which makes it a sanctuary for over 1,200 species of marine life, most notably the abundance of manta rays, turtles, amazing array of spectacular marine life and unspoilt coral reef.
